Documentary review (Lift)
Synopsis- The documentary "Lift" was directed in 2001 by Marc Isaacs and is a 25 minute documentary which follows Isaacs as he stands in a lift for an undefined amount of time as he gets to know each person individually, Isaacs asks questions to each person to see how they respond, at first some are quite confined, however they eventually begin to confidently exchange conversation with Issacs throughout the documentary.
Review- The documentary is an interesting piece but at first glance it seems like a boring film with nothing happening however once you give it a chance you are overwhelmed with different people with different views on life and as each person tells stories of things they've experienced, it grabs your complete attention, for example a man tells the story about his parents deaths and how he has to cope with that, another involves a man who goes out to find a girlfriend occasionally but comes back drunk and unlucky. My favorite part of the documentary is when a women avoids the lift after seeing the camera because it shows that not everybody is comfortable with being filmed which in turn, allows the audience to be grateful that they got to hear about lifestyles, hobbies and experiences from different people. Each individual has a role to play in the documentary which allows the viewer the have mixed emotions as there could be a man on screen who is happy and proud of what he has and then we could have a woman who upset about something and vise versa.
The multiple shots of the fly at first don't seem important, however Isaacs uses it to his advantage to tell the story of life, the fly starts of lively but as the documentary plays on, the fly becomes weaker and eventually dies.
I believe that the documentary is an interactive documentary because Isaacs asks each person questions about themselves and I filmed in real time, however I have found that Issacs admits to manipulating a couple of the interviews in the documentary which means that it's not fully authentic.
The location of the documentary allows for a believable story as it feels real and doesn't force a fake narrative for publicity, the depressing and grey atmosphere allows the audience to identify where the location is instantly and allows for a relatable and believable narrative with emotional parts.
