James Cameron Case study- Working in the Media industry
James Francis Cameron is a Canadian Director and is one of the most well-known and popular film directors to date. He was born on August 16th, 1954 in Ontario Canada and is also a deep sea diver which in 2012, set a new world record for the deepest solo dive ever after he reached the bottom of “The Mariana Trench”.
Cameron was the director, writer, producer, and production designer for “Xenogenesis” in 1978 which was his first ever short film which started his career as a director but before this he dropped out of college and taught himself how to use special effects while working as a truck driver. however, he became majorly successful when he wrote and directed the first "Terminator" movie in 1984 which kick-started his film making passion and led to multiple award winning movies including one of his most popular to date “Titanic” which has won awards for “Best motion picture”, “Best editing” and “Best Director”, the movie also achieved the world record for the highest grossing film at the time. Cameron is also a talented artist as because the drawings that Jack draws in “Titanic” are all Cameron’s work and the hands drawing Rose are Cameron’s also. Cameron felt a true passion about the ship as he visited the real wreckage over 30 times after the film’s release.
Cameron was passionate about the work which he had written when he wrote “The Terminator” and wanted to Direct the film however almost all of the production company’s he pitched to didn’t want an “Inexperienced Director” to take control of the project however Hemdale Pictures allowed him to Direct and Cameron sold the screen play to Gale Hurd of Pacific western productions for 1 Dollar on the condition that he would Direct the film, this allowed him to get his big break and continue to Direct films today.
Despite this, not everybody had a liking to Cameron which was strongly shown when he directed “Aliens” because the crew didn’t like the fact that he was a “Poor substitute for Ridley Scott” and they even refused to watch his previous work so they continued to be sceptical all the way through the production phase of the film, the movie however went on to win multiple awards including “Best editing”, Best Visual effects and “Best sound” and received more praise for the movie than Ridley Scott received for the first movie.
Cameron’s popularity spiked when he released his award winning movie “Avatar” which held the world’s the highest grossing film until it got beat by “Gone with the wind”. “Avatar was nominated in nine categories, including Best Picture and Best Director. However, Cameron lost out on Best director and best picture to his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow, for “The Hurt Locker”.
Cameron currently has multiple Avatar sequels planned for the future and a Terminator reboot is planned due to the negative reviews of Terminator 3, salvation and Genesis, I also dislike these movies compared to the first 2.
Cameron’s net worth is around $600 million which makes him one of the most expensive Directors in the film world.
